It may seem like an obvious statement to say that potpourri is for smelling. Once, my wife brought home a cute plastic bag with a nice bow that was filled with what looked liked round nuts and twigs. It looked like some type of trail mix. Like a shark, circling its wounded prey, I walked around this bag several times trying to make a positive identification. Finally, I untied the bow, emptied some of this mix into my hand and put it in my mouth. With my first chomp, I positively identified the mix as potpourri and not trail mix. If you try this yourself, which I do not recommend, you will discover that potpourri has a very identifiable flavor that you will recognize even if it is your first time tasting the stuff.
