Here ye, here ye! Attention, mothers and fathers, mark Thursday, April 23, 2015 on your calendars. Thursday, April 23, 2015 is, take our daughters and sons to work day. This important day occurs each year on the fourth Thursday in April. Please check with your employer for any restrictions that might pertain to your particular type of employment.
If your employer honors this important event, parents please consider taking advantage of this opportunity to take your daughters and sons day to work with you on April 23, 2015. Every year, daughters and sons all over this land look forward to this day. It is a wonderful way for them to venture into the working world of adults. Through this experience, though their vantage point will be that of a child, children will gain valuable insight as to what it means to participate in society as a worker.
Ultimately, as a parent, your particular job title or type of employment is not the most important element of this day. This is not about you. It is about your child. So whether you are the CEO of a Fortune 500 Company that is thriving or on the verge of bankruptcy, a Teacher, a Secretary, a Machinist, a General Laborer, a Stay at Home Mom or Dad or whatever you might happen to do, please consider allowing your child or children to tag along with you on this day. Regardless of your type of employment, there is much for your children to see and learn about the world that surrounds them.
Your children will benefit from seeing that punctuality is a worthy trait that extends well beyond their time spent in school. Obviously, your children will see you perform the mechanics of your job. Hopefully, they will conclude that you work hard and put forth your best effort. From their youthful gaze, they will see that there are aspects of your job in which you seem proficient and they will probably see your imperfections as well. They will get a taste of how you deal with your successes, failures and the challenging aspects of your job. Your social interactions of the day will most likely not escape their attention. Your children will note your engagements with bosses, subordinates, peers, clients and people that just happen to cross your path.
Hopefully, on April 23, 2015 the unemployment rate will not be unacceptably high. However, if you are unemployed or even under-employed do not dismay. If possible, allow your children to interact with you as you perform job search functions, resume preparation or household chores. Remember, the most important part of the day is the time that you spend with your children. This is the part that they will value the most and will form the memories that last long after the particulars of the day have concluded.
For the overall safety of themselves, their children or the world at large, some parents may be unable to take advantage of this national bring your child to work day. This is particularly true of Pirates and members of the Armed Forces that are dueling with them. Unfortunately, children of parents that are in these careers, though they may be dreaming of participating in a real life enactment of Peter Pan versus Captain Hook, must realize that modern day piracy is a serious problem and is very dangerous to combat. Therefore, children with the hopes of waking up in Neverland will most likely find that these dreams will not come true. If this is your situation or something similar applies to you and your children, do not grieve. Remember to try and spend some quality time with your children doing something else that is special. If this impossible do to physical, time or location restraints, call your children on the phone or write them a letter.
Hopefully, at the end of the day your children will see that you are polite, articulate, fair and compassionate. What a sad day it would be, if at the end of the day your children thought you were a rude, uncompromising and a mean spirited fool.
