Whenever I think about hockey, I am reminded me of a NHL game that I attended some years ago at Madison Square Garden. On that day the New York Rangers faced the Toronto Maple Leafs. One of the members of our group was not a hockey fan, but was a grammar fanatic. She looked up at the scoreboard and saw that it said “Leafs.” It was obviously short for Maple Leafs. This person leaned towards me, pointed at the scoreboard and asked me why it didn’t say “Leaves.” Needless to say, I chuckled and said the team’s name was the Toronto Maple Leafs not the Toronto Maple Leaves. Even today, we still enjoy a laugh about her infamous statement.
