Retarded is a real word, with a real definition and has a rightful place in certain conversations. However, over the last several years, I have noticed that the word retarded has begun to increasingly occupy a place in everyday casual conversation. Unfortunately, I have heard this word used inappropriately by children, teenagers and adults. It is often used to describe an action that is considered less than ideal. It is also used to label a person that has done an action that is considered less than desirable. The following examples shed some light on the inappropriate use of the word retarded: Running the ball on third down and seven is retarded. Our teacher is so retarded for giving us that assignment, during the last week of school. These are just two examples that demonstrate how this word is used inappropriately. However, these portrayals unfortunately represent just the tip of the iceberg.
I think this type of language is not only inappropriate, but disgraceful. It shows profound disrespect and insensitivity to our fellow brethren that are truly retarded. It also speaks down to their loved ones; be it their parents, siblings or significant others. It is my belief that a massive public awareness campaign needs to be launched to increase the general public’s sensitivity to the matter and to help people to understand the harm that they cause by continuing to converse in this fashion. Therefore, I ask you to join me in helping to root out this problem. The next time you hear a person using the word retarded in one of the manners I have described or in another similar context, engage the speaker if you can. Take a moment and attempt to educate that person on the damage that is poured out upon society by allowing this type of language to permeate our culture.

Well said Han, I could not have put it better. This word is used inappropriately way too much, in-fact it was just yesterday that I cringed at hearing one of my own use the word, but this particular person has a foul mouth and uses language I don’t like frequently. I can either fight with her about it or shut up. I choose to pick my battles and shut up in this case. It really is a problem how much I hear this word being bandied about and it is articles like yours that will get the message out, I guess we all just have to keep on trying.
Janelle, we all need to work together to stomp it out. Many people are just too casual with this term and sling it around without much thought.
